Adapted by Ozon from a play by Pierre Barillet and Jean-Pierre Grédy, the film focuses on trophy wife Suzanne (Deneuve) and her wealthy industrialist husband Robert Pujol (Fabrice Luchini).

When the workers at Robert’s umbrella factory go on strike, taking him hostage, Suzanne steps in to smooth things over. But when Robert wants to take charge again, Suzanne isn’t as pleased to hand over the reins as he’d imagined…

Click on the audio file below to hear Ozon chat to film journalist Jan Gilbert about the influence of Billy Wilder, how bringing Deneuve and Dépardieu together again was a cinephile’s dream, and why recreating the 70s was such a pleasure.
